How does Semrush work?

SEMRush uses Semrushbot to analyze the top 20 results for each keyword in their extensive database, which contains over 100 million keywords and 45 million domains.

To keep all of their databases up-to-date, SEMRush employs a live upgrade algorithm that upgrades them on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis—depending on popularity.

For example, they upgrade 3 million keywords every day in just their USA database.

What problems Semrush solving?

Semrush is an amazing SEO tool that lets you do keyword research, track competitor keywords, run SEO audits, find backlink opportunities and so much more. Semrush is a vital tool for anyone who wants to improve their search engine optimization. I use it to help me with tasks like keyword research, content creation, competitor backlink analysis, and more!

The understandings provided by SEMRush are superb, and they have been game-changers for my customers’ websites as well as my own. In other words: it’s a superior toolset.

SEMRush provides remarkable features such as its auditing and link-building tools. On-page SEO checker

SEMrush’s on-page SEO checker is key for understanding how well your web pages are ranking. The suggestions provided for improving backlinking, content, SERP features, user experience, and technical SEO will help improve the overall ranking of your web pages.

Organic Research

This feature is not only simple to use, but very powerful if you understand how to take advantage of it. The Organic Research report provides data on the amount of traffic a site receives from Google and if/how that number has changed over time. Although it can be interesting to see how a competitor’s rankings have fluctuated, the real value lies in being able to regularly check which keywords they rank for in organic search results so that you can incorporate them into your own keyword research strategy.

Semrush boasts an impressive 21.1 billion keywords in its database, which is updated frequently. While no data set is 100% accurate, SEMrush’s organic traffic estimates are as accurate as you’ll find on the market; The data is spot-on 99 times out of 100. However, there may be the occasional instance where the data does not reflect reality accurately.

Semrush’s Backlink Analytics

I believe that Semrush’s backlink checker is excellent. The reason I think this is that Semrush has a very large link index which means it can find new pages and backlinks quickly. When using a link analysis tool, these are the two qualities you want most. While Ahrefs’ UI might be slightly better in my opinion, Semrush’s filters more than makeup for any issues with their interface specifically when trying to locate specific types of backlinks.

Semrush’s backlink checker is, in many ways, comparable to Ahrefs. For starters, it has a large index and plenty of features–such as domain authority metrics (called “Authority Score” in Semrush), anchor text breakdown, the number of links a site receives over time, and more.

One way Semrush stands out is that it breaks down a site’s referring domains into different categories.

For example, 25% of my backlinks come from sites in the “Marketing” niche. And another 25% are from websites that Semrush considers “Search Engine Optimization & Marketing”.

This makes sense to me. The focus of my site is digital marketing and SEO, so most of my links come from other sites on those topics. Semrush also provides a list of websites with similar link profiles. This can be helpful when trying to find the right sites to reverse engineer. If two sites have a similar link profile, it’s likely because they’re both getting links from places you want to get links from.

Traffic Analytics

Traffic Analytics provides data on a site’s traffic that doesn’t come from Google. This includes information on how visitors interact with the site once they arrive there.

For example, Semrush estimates my site gets 1.3M unique visitors per month.

This estimate factors in SEO and also accounts for YouTube, social media, other blogs, and direct traffic sources.

How precise is that figure?

Well, according to my Google Analytics report, we had 1,555,266 unique visitors (“Users”) over the last 30 days period.

Keyword Overview

This feature allows you to conduct a deep analysis of individual keywords. In the report, you can view data such as search volume, keyword difficulty, and CPC estimates. You can also see how competitive the SERPs are for that particular keyword. Although this tool doesn’t offer anything groundbreaking, it’s still useful because of the sheer number of keyword ideas that it provides.

Semrush produces keyword ideas in three ways: variations, questions, and related keywords.

Keyword variations are terms that you might come up with on your own. For example, here are some variations for the keyword “social media marketing” that Semrush provides.

You might find some long-tail keywords that you hadn’t considered before among these suggestions, but for the most part, this list is not great for uncovering new keywords.

On the other hand, the list of related questions IS really helpful.

The keyword research tool I use generates questions that are related to the topic at hand, which allows me to get a better understanding of what people are searching for. The “related keywords” list provides terms that show up in conjunction with the seed keyword, but may not be exactly the same.

Keyword Gap

The Keyword Gap tool in Semrush lets you compare your keyword ranking with a handful of competitors. This is useful for finding keywords that many of your competitors rank for in Google, but you don’t. Overall, it works very well.

However, when I analyzed a few of my competitors (on an equal playing field in terms of domain authority and SEO), Semrush found a list of keywords that would benefit from optimization.

Topic Research Tool

Semrush is a tool designed to assist with content marketing for bloggers, although it can improve SEO results as well. Usage is simple: Enter a topic you want to write about on your blog, and Semrush will present related topics along with suggesting successful existing content pieces on those topics. For example, when I input “Digital Marketing” into the system, it generated a list of similar topics that included

related success stories.

Position Tracking

This is Semrush’s rank-tracking feature.

The position tracking feature of Semrush is similar to other rank trackers in that itMonitor your website’s movement up and down the search engines for specific keywords, as well as overall visibility and distribution among rankings. There isn’t much else to say about rank trackers; they all work the same way. Simply enter a list of target keywords into the tool, and it will automatically check against Google’s ranking system.

Site Audit

The health of your website is important for business. Semrush’s “Site Health” percentage score makes it easy to see your site’s overall technical SEO health compared with other websites. With this tool, you’re also able to get into the weeds if you want more specific information about things you can do to improve aspects such as crawling, indexing, and internal linking.

For example, my site has a site health score of 74%.

That’s not bad. But, as you can see, there’s plenty of room for improvement.

Some of my pages have a large HTML size, which negatively impacts the speed at which the page loads. The tool also suggests that I cache more of my CSS in order to improve my ranking. While these are minute details, they will make a difference in your rankings. If you want to ensure that your site’s technical SEO is up to par, Semrush’s audit tool is an excellent way to check things off of your list.

“Link Building Tool” from Semrush is different than other SEO tools because it provides a streamlined experience. With this tool, you canintegrate your workflow so that you aren’t jumping between multiple tabs and platforms.

This feature can be used for link prospecting, which involves finding sites and pages that are likely to link to you. You can also use this tool to send outreach emails and track your results.

Advertising Research

Semrush has always been focused on PPC, from the very beginning. They continue to invest a lot of their resources into their PPC competitive analysis features, which allows users to see every ad that a competitor is running, including how much traffic those ads bring in. CPCs are also included so you have an estimate of how much that site spends per month on Google Ads.

The ability to see your competitor’s ads is extremely valuable and will help you determine your own Quality Score. CTR (Click Through Rate) is the number one factor in Quality Score, so if you can identify which ads have high CTRs, you’ll be able to improve your own score. Keep in mind that a competitor’s ad might have been running for months or years because it has a good CTR – otherwise, they wouldn’t still be using it.

For example, if you look at this set of ads in the credit card niche, you can see that a good chunk of them use the same phrase.

When you’re running PPC ads, it’s important to test different copy and keywords to see what works best. You can find a list of competitor sites that are bidding on the same keywords by hitting the “Competitor” tab in Semrush. Semrush Pricing

Semrush offers three main tiers: Pro, Guru and Business. The company’s Pro plan is priced similarly to Moz and Ahrefs plans, which all start at around $100 per month. Where Semrush differs is in their Enterprise tier pricing; while Ahrefs’ most expensive Agency plan costs $999/month and Moz’s top-tier plan comes in at $599/month, Semrush’s enterprise “Business” plan is only $449.95/month.

If you’re an agency, Semrush is a great value because it offers tons of features, data, and PDF reports that can be sent to clients. However, if you’re just starting out in the business world, Semrush’s lower-tier pricing is comparable to its major competitors.

Semrush Alerts

The Semrush site audit tool is essential for any SEO expert. I use it to track my keyword rankings and the traffic of my competitors. Semrush alerts me daily if my keywords have moved up or down in rank, and every week I get an email with traffic growth stats for both my site and my competitors’ sites. There are also a ton of other useful tools included, like a backlink checker, which I use mostly for websites that aren’t mine.

Semrush Disadvantages

As with any platform on the market, Semrush has a few CONS I’ve noted.

Pricing

One downside of Semrush is its pricing; the premium version can be a bit pricey. Overall though, Semrush is an amazing and valuable tool – just not one that’s best suited for beginners who haven’t made money from SEO yet. Some people in poor countries (e.g., Asia) simply cannot afford to use Semrush.

Outdated insights

Some metrics, such as low-volume keywords, don’t seem accurate. However, it’s important to remember that these are only estimates and not something to completely trust. I always confirm them with other metrics like competition level or keyword difficulty.

There is a margin of error when we compare the data from our Google analytics with Semrush, but it’s not entirely inaccurate. In fact, we could say it’s about 75% accurate. Additionally, it would be useful if Semrush had a heatmap or customer tracking tool to identify customer behavior on a webpage.

Semrush UI design

I generally like the tool’s UI design, but some people have noted that it isn’t suitable for their needs, especially when they’re working and in a hurry. They often have to search a lot for the options they need. The onboarding process could be improved to alleviate this issue.

The data is not 100% accurate when we compare the same results with Google analytics. Such as the bounce rate and all. But it’s not entirely wrong as well. We can say it’s 75% accurate. Also maybe Semrush could provide a heatmap or customer tracking tool to identify what customers are doing on the webpage, then that would be useful. For example, we have a chatbot development services page and we would like to know what the user actions are on the page and why the bounce rates are high. But Semrush does not provide any info on it. It just shows the bounce rate but not the reason behind the increased bounce rate. I belive that an SEO tool must cover everything and provide info on each and every matter.
