When you’re starting a YouTube channel, it can be tough to decide what kind of videos to produce. There are so many options and possibilities, and it’s hard to know where to start. If you’re feeling stuck, here are some ideas for choosing a video topic.
Start with something you’re passionate about
If you’re passionate about a topic, that will come across in your videos and your viewers will be more engaged. If you’re not sure what you’re passionate about, try brainstorming a list of things you enjoy doing or topics you’re interested in learning more about.
This will help you to stay motivated to create new videos. Many content creators give up too early but usually YouTube channels are growing slowly, sometimes it takes years.
Choose a topic that is popular on YouTube
Remaining mindful of how my videos can help others learn or improve upon something, I am better able to generate quality YouTube content ideas. Knowing that your tips can alleviate someone’s pain points motivates me to continue creating helpful videos.
You can use the YouTube search bar to see what kinds of videos are currently being uploaded and viewed. Look at the top results and try to determine why those videos are popular. You can also look at the “trending” section on YouTube to see what topics are currently being talked about.
This process helps me better understand the type of content people are searching for.
Consider your audience
Who do you want to watch your videos? What kind of videos do they like to watch? You can use YouTube analytics to see who is watching your videos and get an idea of what kinds of videos they’re interested in.
The comments section of videos is a valuable source for YouTube video ideas and subjects. Viewers frequently suggest additional themes for you to discuss or inquire about matters that may merit further study in your content strategy.
Always take the time to read feedback on not just your videos, but also those of other creators. In this way, you’ll get ideas for new content from a variety of sources. Additionally, monitoring feedback is one method of determining how successful you are with the topics you cover.
Keep it specific
When you narrow down your topic, choose a specific angle to focus on. This will make your videos more focused and easier to produce. For example, instead of making videos about “cars,” you could focus on a specific make or model of car, or do a review of a new car that’s just come out.
YouTube loves niched channels. If you get off the topic, the YouTube algorithm will not promote it as featured and suggested. Also, your subscribers will not respond to different topics.
Be consistent about the topic
If you want to build up a following, it’s important to be consistent with the topic of your videos. People will subscribe to your channel because they’re interested in the type of content you produce. If you constantly change your topics, you’ll confuse your viewers and it will be harder to build up a following.
Of course, you don’t have to stick to one topic forever. You can always branch out and explore new topics as your channel grows. But in the beginning, it’s best to focus on a single topic so you can establish yourself as an expert in that area.
Or create multiple channels and upload targeted content regarding the topic.
Make sure you have enough content
Once you’ve chosen your topic, make sure you have enough ideas to keep your videos going. You don’t want to run out of content halfway through your YouTube channel. If you’re not sure, start with a few videos and then see how it goes.
You need to plan your uploads. Batching videos is an effective way to be consistent with your YouTube channel while also giving yourself a break from filming. But you should publish regularly. YouTube doesn’t like pauses.
You have to be an expert on the topic
If you’re going to be talking about a specific topic, it’s important that you have some expertise in that area. This doesn’t mean you have to be an expert, but you should at least know more about the topic than the average person.
You don’t want to come across as fake or like you’re just making things up as you go along. This will turn viewers off and they’ll stop watching your videos.
Another way is to retell or reinterpret a competing content creator’s video. If you’re not an expert on the topic, this is a good way to get started. The idea behind this is to upgrade always created content and add value to the original.
Think about the monetization of the video
If you’re looking to make money from your YouTube channel, choose a topic that will be popular and generate a lot of views. You can also look into affiliate marketing or product placement to make money from your videos.
Find a sponsor or extend the video to show more ads. More ads equal more revenue.
More video views or targeted audience
If you prefer more views, you have to choose popular niches where the search and the interest is significantly high. If you want a targeted audience, then you should consider a niche that is not so popular, but the interest in the topic will bring you better sales.
Broad niches = fewer sales and more traffic
Targeted niches = best for sales and less traffic (it’s not good for monetizing with video views)
